GIG Karasek is an active partner in the ZEUS (Zero Emissions throUgh Sector Coupling) cooperation project, an ambitious research project to decarbonize the electricity, steel, and cement sectors – industries in which CO2 emissions are particularly high or unfortunately unavoidable to a certain extent due to the raw materials used in the production processes.

Ten renowned project partners from science and industry are pursuing a common goal – the realization of a pilot plant for the production of green hydrogen and the conversion of CO2 into industrial products. The initiator and project coordinator of this ambitious project is the metallurgical competence center K1-MET. In October, the Ars Electronica Center in Linz was the venue for the exciting kick-off meeting.

As a global Austrian supplier of high-quality industrial equipment and a pioneer in the field of electrochemical conversion technology, GIG Karasek is contributing to the research project with its expertise in CO2 valorization.

Andreas Schnitzhofer, General Manager at GIG Karasek says: "The more often we are reminded of the immense value and limited availability of our fossil fuels, the more important flagship projects like ZEUS become. Now it's time to get down to business! Ideally in line with the new slogan adopted by the International Olympic Committee in 2021: 'Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter‘ (Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together)."

Project partners:
K1-MET GmbH, Energy Institute at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, GIG Karasek GmbH, University of Linz – Institute for Organic Chemistry, University of Leoben – Chair of Process Engineering for Industrial Environmental Protection, Zementwerk Hatschek GmbH, Vienna University of Technology – Institute of Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Technical Life Sciences, VERBUND AG, voestalpine Stahl GmbH, WIVA P&G – Hydrogen Initiative, flagship region, Austria Power & Gas

This project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund and carried out as part of the Energy Research Program 2022, FFG project number: FO999903855, total cost: EUR 16.8m, funding: EUR 7.7m.
