The ECO2CELL Cube team has reached a key milestone on the path to full operational readiness at its site in Attnang-Puchheim: the regulatory notification procedure has been successfully completed, and the safety concept has been officially approved. These approvals represent the central prerequisite for controlled commissioning and the planned 24/7 operating phases—bringing the official launch of the compact CO₂ valorization container system a significant step closer.

The CO₂ electrolysis unit, featuring patented cell technology, is housed in a 20-foot container at pilot scale and is designed for an electrical input of up to 15 kW and a CO₂ conversion capacity of up to 5.34 kg of CO₂ per hour. It serves as a realistic test and research system for applications in the fields of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) and Power-to-X.

Approval procedures and safety requirements pose a particular challenge, especially for innovative technologies of this kind. Aligning a novel, containerized process concept with regulatory requirements required structured safety engineering, including detailed hazard assessments, an explosion protection concept, as well as clearly defined protective measures and documented safety verifications. This demanding step has now been successfully completed.

With this milestone achieved, a significant portion of the overall project has been successfully implemented. The ECO2CELL Cube is part of a funded Green Frontrunner program, for which GIG Karasek was awarded the contract.

This marks the beginning of the next phase, with a clear focus on the final launch and full commissioning. The goal of establishing the technology as an industrial-scale solution for CO₂ utilization is now within reach.
